The former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Portugal star,Luis Figo withdrew back from the Fifa presidency race on Thursday 21 may night with a damning parting shot at the Sepp Blatter-led “dictatorship”
Figo said that he agreed to run for the FIFA president because 'he knew that FIFA needs change' and he feels that change is 'urgent', but said he had 'witnessed consecutive incidents' that 'should shame anyone who desires soccer to be free, clean and democratic
Luis Figo, whom his manifesto included staging World Cups across two continents and who enjoyed the backing of star names such as David Beckham and Jose Mourinho but not enough of the Fifa electorate, made it known that he would be ready to serve again “whenever it is proven to me that we are not living under a dictatorship”.
He added: “This process is a plebiscite [election] for the delivery of absolute power to one man – something I refuse to go along with.
The battle for the FIFA presidency will now be a two-horse race after Luis Figo joined Michael van Praag in withdrawing his candidacy on Thursday leaving the race to Prince Ali bin Al Hussein and the current president Sepp Blatter .
